Hello everyone, let me start by wishing you all a very Happy New Year. I hope 2013 turns out to be a wonderful 12 months for you 🙂

Today we launch an important campaign which will change people’s perceptions of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

For too long the area has been put down and written off by people who have probably never been here. They talk of a place stuck in a bygone age, where chimneys belched out smoke and everyone worked in a pit or a potbank.

They hark back to the times when Stoke-on-Trent was voted the worst place to live in the UK, and when we had nine of the city’s 60 councillors were from the BNP, painting it as some kind of Mordor-like region inhabited by orcs, trolls and uruk-hai. (Yes, I watched too much Lord of the Rings over the holidays.)

Much of this is down to the national media’s general laziness and pessimism – they are completely unwilling to venture north of the M25 and spend time finding out what really happens outside London.

But we have to take plenty of the blame too – we are too often happy to talk the area down, while at the same time being reluctant to shout about our success.

Of course, the area is not perfect, and we have plenty of challenges to deal with.

But you know what? We also have plenty to be proud of – beautiful countryside on our doorstep; thriving, innovative businesses showing the world how it should be done; glorious buildings serving as a permanent reminder of our industrial heritage; and a population which, despite not being the most well-off, goes out of its way to help local charities and communities.

That’s what the #saysomethingpositive campaign is all about. Every day, we will post positive messages about the area, on Twitter, Facebook and this blog.

And we want you to help us. We want you to tell us something positive about you, your family, your school, your community, your band, your business, or even your football team!

Make it your New Year’s Resolution to #saysomethingpositive about our fantastic area every day – just end your update with our hashtag and we’ll see if we can change some perceptions and consign some of those pre-conceived notions to the dustbin.
