Struggle using the Internet? Want to know how to get your business online?

You’re in luck! The next session of our PR Coaching Programme will be here before you know it.

On 20th December at Lymedale Business Centre, Newcastle-under-Lyme, we have a great speaker coming along to give you advice on how your business can utilise the power of Facebook to bring in enquiries and for promotion.

There are currently more than 500 million people on Facebook and it is one of the most visited websites on the Internet, so getting your business a page/group on here is bound to get you noticed.

Not only that… our session is taken by a professional Social Media Advisor, Liz Thursfield, who has her own website Ariadne’s Thread.

Liz’ approach to consultancy is to concentrate on getting you the results you want and not imposing her own agenda. She is direct and straightforward, giving workable solutions!

When we did a LinkedIn poll, a lot of you said you would like more information on how to harness the power of the Internet, so why not come along and get some advice from Liz?

We hope to see you there.

If you’d like to join us, give us a call on 01782 472035/07880 733138 or e-mail

Sam Metcalf

Have you heard the news?

Our Be Your Own PR Person coaching programme is moving to a larger venue due to increased demand.

The next session will be held in the lecture theatre at the Sutherland Institute in Longton.

We decided to move from Lymedale Business Centre because many business owners were eager to hear the thoughts of speaker Sam Metcalf, who is the deputy editor of Midlands Business Insider, the region’s largest business magazine.

The programme has had a very encouraging response in its first 12 months and we are looking to expand it into new areas next year.

The two-hour session takes place on November 22nd 2010, between 12 and 2. Places cost £60 + VAT.

As I am sure many of you are aware, the programme consists of 12 sessions, each covering a different aspect of PR. These include organising local media coverage, using social networking sites, and putting together events on a limited budget.

A grant of up to £1000 is available from Business Link West Midlands for business owners who would like to take part in the programme. The deadline for applications for this funding is December 31st 2010.

If you’d like to join us, give us a call on 01782 472035/07880 733138 or e-mail

We would also like you to take part in our new LinkedIn poll to give us an idea of which sessions of our PR Coaching Programme you would find the most useful. Lifestyle magazines & business coverage

Well we’ve focussed on specialist business magazines and the global phenomenon that is social networking in our last two coaching programme sessions, so it’s time to bring things a little closer to home.

On August 23rd, we’ll be talking about local lifestyle magazines, like Staffordshire Life, and The North Staffordshire Magazine. There are hundreds of county mags like this around the country, and they can all represent great avenues for your PR stories. However they have to be approached differently to many other publications.

While many do run news articles, that’s not their major focus, because they are aimed at affluent homeowners – particularly the female ones. And because they are read by a largely female audience, they don’t like dry business stories about increased turnover, or product launches, or anything like that.

They want more human interest stories, which talk about the person behind the business and what makes them different. In our case, we’ve had most success with stories about:

  • a former policeman who quit life on the beat to set up his own photography business
  • two friends who used their business expertise to help each other recover from a broken back and IBS respectively
  • an aspiring painter whose unusual, unique approach to his work had attracted the attention of Prince Charles

First we’ll focus on Staffordshire Life, which is the largest and longest-running county magazine in Staffordshire, boasting an 11000 circulation and dating back to 1982. Then later in the year we’ll cover The North Staffordshire Magazine, which has a 6000 circulation.

These are both viable targets for your stories, because they are read by affluent individuals in rural areas, and by creating the right story and writing it properly could generate coverage worth thousands of pounds.

The session takes place on August 23rd, between 12 and 2, at the Lymedale Business Centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Some interesting developments…

Hello everyone.

Just a quick post to update you on a few things. We’ve moved to spanking new premises at the Lymedale Business Centre in Newcastle – ideal for anyone looking to expand a small business by the way.

A big thank you to Paul Davies at Newstead Insurance Brokers for helping us out with our public & employers’ liability insurance too – without that I’d still be working from home.

We’ve got a new intern starting with us on Monday too – Ellen Argile will be starting a six month placement, organised with the help of the West Midlands Graduate Internship scheme (another thing worth looking at if you need some help with your workload).

Ellen will be concentrating on our social media activity for the next few weeks, helping our clients interact better with customers & prospects and bringing their blogs to wider audiences.

And finally, news of our expansion is starting to hit the West Midlands media. Have a look at this:

Hopefully a few more will be shouting about us in the next week or so.

That’s it for now, but just wanted to say our door is open if you want to drop in for a coffee to have a look around and meet our new recruit!

Have a good weekend everyone.

Coaching programme launches on Monday!

The wait is almost over people!

Yes, the first session of the Richard Swancott Associates PR coaching programme, known as Be Your Own PR Person, takes place at the Lymedale Business Centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme on Monday (12pm-2pm).

Map of Lymedale Business Centre

Our first speaker is David Johnson, the Business Editor at our local newspaper The Sentinel.

David will be speaking on what The Sentinel wants from your press releases, which types of stories will be more likely to generate the best coverage, and most importantly what they don’t want in a story.

We are trying to rid the world of the rubbish press release!

We are still looking to line up further speakers, but we’ll be looking to bring in experts from local magazines and radio stations, and others to present on using social media, writing award applications, and finding public speaking opportunities.

Give us a shout if you would like more information. Don’t worry if you can’t make it on Monday – it’s a rolling programme so any sessions you miss will be tagged on to the end.
