INTRODUCING SIAN, OUR NEW RECRUIT

Hi, my name is Siân and I’ve just started some work experience with Richard Swancott Associates.

I’m in my second year at Keele University and I’m currently studying for my degree in Politics and Economics.

I’m really interested in writing and journalism, so PR seemed like a great industry to get some experience in.

As part of my course I’ve been taking part in a work experience module for which I am expected to undertake a 75-hour placement, which I will be doing with RSA

As preparation for a placement I have had workshops with Keele’s careers advisor, learning about writing CVs, covering letter and skills audits, and the best ways to present myself in the jobs market, but now it’s time to get down to business.

One of the things I’ve been doing so far at RSA is managing the social media pages for some of the company’s clients.

This has mostly involved accessing the client’s Twitter pages and following other pages that are of a similar interest, as well as posing appropriate ‘tweets’ in order to gain a larger following.

This has been really interesting for me as a consumer, as when I follow companies from my own Twitter account, and I read their tweets, I have never really thought about who is writing them, and this has given me a great insight.

I’ve also written a short piece of writing about a web-design company called ExtraMile Communications who are based in Eccleshall.

The piece was about how the company has stuck to its local roots and is choosing to expand their company within Eccleshall rather than moving out of the area, and linking it to a new initiative in Eccleshall called Totally Locally, which encourages residents to spend £5 a week in their local independent shops to keep their economy thriving.

I’m really looking forward to the rest of my placement here at RSA and you should expect to hear a lot more from me in the coming weeks!

Siân

OLLIE MARLAND TO OPEN YOUNG ENTERPRISE EVENT

We’ve lined up a local superstar in the making to open our Young Enterprise Area Finals on March 26th.

Ollie Marland is 18 (just turned), plays for the Port Vale youth team, has a brilliant voice, and a following of thousands on Twitter and Facebook.

He’s already won loads of talent contests, performed at various big events around North Staffordshire, and written an album with producer Mike Hawkes.

And he’s going to open our show on the 26th with a song! We’re hoping he’ll stick around and present one of our awards too.

Ollie is a great role model for our young people because he proves that you can have a bright future if you aspire high enough.

And that’s what Young Enterprise is all about too.

There is no limit to what a young person can do – they just have to believe in themselves.

A QUICK RECAP ON #SAYSOMETHINGPOSITIVE

Happy Wednesday everyone!

Hope you’re all feeling positive after getting the first half of the week out of the way! All downhill to the weekend from here!

I thought I’d give you a quick recap on our #saysomethingpositive campaign.

We’ve come a long way since the launch on 1st January.

We’ve had almost 500 mentions and our busiest day so far was 21st Jan (The Most Depressing Day of the Year), with 277 tweets alone.

We mustn’t lose momentum.

Changing people’s perceptions of our area is going to take much longer than one month – we’ve got decades of lazy assumptions to get rid of.

So we need you all to keep tweeting on your favourite things about North Staffs. There are 20 positive statements here if you need a hand.

We want tweets about your business, your band, your community, your school, even your football team. Or anything else you can think of which makes you love your area!

Hopefully we can change a few opinions and encourage more people to do business here and pay us a visit!

Ok, that’s it for now!

Have a good week team!

BIG DAY FOR YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS TOMORROW

It’s a very important day in the Young Enterprise calendar tomorrow.

Our teams of young entrepreneurs will be exhibiting their wares at the Potteries Shopping Centre, Stoke-on-Trent, for the annual trade fair.

It’s the first time most of them have sold to members of the general public – a great experience!

It’s all part of the Company Programme, a national competition which seeks to find our best company and the Richard Bransons and Peter Joneses of tomorrow.

It would be great if we could have a team from North Staffordshire at the national finals in the summer!

But to do that, they need tomorrow to be a success, so it it would be great to see you lending your support at the Potteries Centre, between 9am and 6pm.

If you would like to get involved in Young Enterprise by the way, we are always looking for volunteers from the local business community to mentor young people through the journey.

Give me a call on 01782 472035/07880 733138 for more info.

TOM IS LEAVING US TODAY…

Unfortunately guys, I will be leaving RSA at the end of this week.

It will be a sad day, but I will leave the company based on good terms.

I have been offered the chance to own shares and eventually become a director in a local coaching company called ‘Fundacats’.

I will operate as Head of Recruitment and will look to push the business forward to help grow the company throughout Staffordshire.

For me personally it’s an opportunity that I cannot miss out on, as one of my life aims is to run a business.

The main part of this is the fact that Richard and me will part on good terms, stay in touch and help each other out when needs be.

We have some very modern and exciting plans, for instance for the charities we work with, so keep your eyes open for different events Arch and Young Enterprise will be holding.

Over the course of three months working for Richard, I have learnt a whole variety of different skills.

My grammar, punctuation and writing skills have improved massively, (hopefully) and I have discovered different linguistic techniques.

My confidence when networking and presenting have also developed from experience as I have met a lot of different business people, and learnt the basics about how business works.

I have also learnt how to be professional when writing an email and speaking with a media source over the phone, which has helped my communication skills massively.

Overall I have gained some office work experience, developed my English skills and learnt about promotion and marketing techniques.

Most of all I’ve met a friend who has helped me develop massively as a person both academically and professionally.

Many thanks Richard, I’m sure we will be in touch in the future and hopefully even do some business together!

I would like to say thanks to Tom for all his hard work over the past few months and all the best for the future. I think it’s important for people to have a day job they enjoy – we spend eight hours a day at work, for almost 50 years of our lives, so it’s vital to do something which is fun, and not a chore. I think Tom has found that with Fundacats so I hope it all works out for him.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY 2013

We support two charities in our local community: Arch North Staffordshire and Young Enterprise (North Staffordshire Area Board).

Both are very worthy causes with two distinct remits. Arch helps the victims of domestic violence and homelessness, while Young Enterprise aims to improve young people’s career prospects and give them the skills to run their own business.

Both have a series of events in 2013 and we need your help to spread the word and bring in some donations!

Here’s what Arch is up to over the next couple of months:

January 28th-February 1st: a series of events to mark National Homelessness Week, culminating in the annual sleep out at venues around North Staffordshire and South Cheshire

Feb 12th: ten pin bowling night at Tenpin, Festival Park, Stoke-on-Trent. Starts at 7.30pm, £12.50 per person (with a free drink)

All the money raised from these, and other Arch events, goes direct to the victims of domestic violence – particularly the children who are often the forgotten victims.

None of the money will be spent on administration, salaries or any of Arch’s general running costs.

As for Young Enterprise, this is a very busy time for everyone involved in our Company Programme.

At the beginning of February (Sat 2nd), our companies will be exhibiting their wares at the Potteries Shopping Centre, in the annual trade fair.

And then at the end of March, they will be presenting to an audience of local business people at the Young Enterprise Area Finals, at Alton Towers.

This is a free event, taking place on the evening of Tuesday 26th March, and we need as many of you to be there as possible, to lend your support to our young achievers.

They have been running their own businesses since September, dealing with everything from raising capital and product development, to marketing and keeping their accounts up-to-date.

March 26th will be the first time many of them have presented on stage in front of a large audience, so it’s a big challenge for them but a great experience!

Hopefully we’ll be seeing you at one or two of those events.

Again, all money raised for Young Enterprise goes towards helping more young people, and more schools, take part in the competition.

HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE #BLUEMONDAY?

So, how will you be marking Blue Monday this year?

No, not the classic tune from New Order, which of course deserves its own day of celebration, but the Most Depressing Day of the Year.

None the wiser?

Well, back in 2005, psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall devised a formula, taking into account various things which affect our mental state, e.g. the wait for our next pay day, our level of debt, and the weather, and calculated that the third Monday of January was the Most Depressing Day of the Year.

As most of us are paid early in December, it feels like ages since you had some money, doesn’t it? And there’s probably still another week to go until next pay day 😦

If you’re anything like me, you over-spent at Christmas, and put most of it on your credit card to worry about another day. Well that ‘another day’ probably just arrived, when your credit card statement dropped on the doormat 😦

Oh and don’t forget the fact that it was probably still dark when you got out of bed, and it was pretty grim outside 😦

It’s easy to succumb to the depression and think ‘Woe is me’, isn’t it!

Well, you know what? We’re not going to do that this time!

In fact, we’re gonna do the opposite!

This year, on Monday 21st January, we’re going to do something extra positive, something amazing – let’s banish all those miserable thoughts and #saysomethingpositive about North Staffs 🙂

We want all of you to think of five positive things to say about our beautiful, thriving, friendly, inspiring, historic area, and tweet them on Blue Monday.

So get your thinking caps on, and in the meantime, have a listen to this masterpiece.

WE ARE RECRUITING!

Happy Friday everyone!

Wanted to finish the first week back on a high and announce that we are looking for one or two people to join the team here at Richard Swancott Associates!

We have two positions to fill – Account Executive and Account Manager.

The Account Executive position would suit someone new to the #PR industry, maybe just out of college and looking to get started, while for the Account Manager vacancy we would need someone with at least three years experience, who can handle campaigns and bring in business themselves.

We would be happy to speak to anyone with a passion for #PR, or any kind of #PR and/or #marketing experience, so if that’s you (or you know someone who’s interested in a career in #PR) please give us a shout on info@richardswancottassociates.co.uk.

Look forward to hearing from you!

Have a great weekend people!
